Description: Incredible Hopi carved Ogre Family (Soyoko) Kachina set by Dominic East of Walpi. From left to right they are "Grandmother", "Ogre", "Old Grandma", "Little Ogre Girl". Also included is a handwritten card from Dominic with a description of the set! The Ogres come in the winter to heal and bring discipline to the people. They make people pay for their lives. The men and boys offer meat and the women and girls offer bread, pastries and ground sweet corn as payment for their lives. This is a really nice set! They actually nest inside of each other similar to Russian nesting dolls! How unique! Dominc learned the art of carving from his grandfather Tino Youvella and his uncles Alex Youvella, Darnell Youvella and Preston Youvella. He started carving back in the when he was 17 years old. He carves his contemporary katsinas from the root of a cottonwood tree. However, this nesting set is made of basswood. He uses acrylic paints for his colors.
