Zia Pueblo Pottery
Zia Pueblo is one of the smaller of the 19 New Mexico Pueblos, but very active in pottery. The clay from Zia is a dark red and when combined with a white slip turns a buff color after firing. Pots are typically hand coiled, painted with natural paints and fired outdoors. Designs include the Zia Bird, Deer, Flowers and geometric designs. Noted potters from Zia Include Marcellus & Elizabeth Medina, Ruby Panana, Sofia Medina, Ralph Aragon, Reyes Pino Medina, Louis Medina, Yvonne Shije and others.
