Description: Incredible Hopi Shalako Taka Kachina by Dominic East of Walpi. The Shalako Katsinam usually come in pairs (male & female). This one is the male. They represent clouds and rain and only come around about every 10 years. The ceremony involves other kachinas including cloud beings and cloud guards. The headdress represents clouds, lightning, rain, rainbows and feathers. It has a village carved into the base! Dominic learned the art of carving from his grandfather Tino Youvella and his uncles Alex Youvella, Darnell Youvella and Preston Youvella. He started carving back in the when he was 17 years old. He carves his contemporary katsinas from the root of a cottonwood tree. He uses acrylic paints for his colors.
