Hopi Pottery

The Hopi are a Native American Tribe, who primarily live on the Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona. The name Hopi is a shortened form of their autonym, Hopituh Shi-nu-mu ("The Peaceful People" or "Peaceful Little Ones"). Hopi pottery is hand coiled, painted with natural paints made from Bee Weed plant, minerals and painted with a Yucca brush. Pots are covered in sheep dung and fired outdoors. Due to the iron in the clay the pottery forms a orange colored blush which is highly desirable. Common designs include Migration patterns, Eagle Feathers, Rain and Mountain designs as well as animals like Turtles, Lizards, Bears & Deer. Noted potters include Nampeyo of Hano, Fannie Nampeyo, Elva Nampeyo, Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, Joy Navasie, Thomas Polacca, Helen Naha and more contemporary potters including Preston Duwyenie, Iris Nampeyo, Rachel Sahmie, Rainy Naha, Dextra Quotskuyva, Les Namingha, Al Qoyawayma, Vernida Polacca, Darlene James, Debbie Clashin, Dee Setalla, Stetson Setalla, Louden Silas, Gloria Mahle, Val Kahe, Lydia Mahle, Adelle Nampeyo, Garrett Maho, Aggie Setalla, Steve Lucas and many others.
