Description: Traditional Hopi hand coiled bowl fired outdoors by Gwen Setalla. It has a Kiva mural interpretation of a Parrot Deity figure painted in the center. From head downward it has dots representing corn/raindrops, Black clouds with straight lines representing water falling/raining, water wave with dots corn/raindrops. The water wave design can also represent the germination of a plant when it starts uncurling coming up from the soil.Tail feathers representing rainfall. It also has dragonflies representing moisture/fertility. Right bottom corner in an ancestral parrot image with a dragonfly representation etched in it's body. The left bottom corner is representation of a cattail plant.There was a time when Hopi people were near starvation because of poor farming season so they used cattail for nourishment. The X's are stars. The circles with dots are corn or planets with great spirit in center. The fine specs inside the bowl represent mist. On the rim are the 3 basic colors used to paint the designs. Gwen used her pinky to dab the colors on in those 4 places. You sometimes see this on ancestral Hopi pottery. Finally, on the outer rim are tadpoles representing moisture and fertility! What a beautiful piece! Gwen is the daughter of Pauline Setalla and the sister of Dee Setalla, Agnes Nahsonhoya, Stetson Setalla, Justina Setalla and Karen Namoki.
